2005 Grant Recipient Updates!

It has been a very busy year for us. We've had over 70 adoptions so far this year, and as you know when one rabbit goes out one (or more) comes in. Your grant paid for spays and wellness checks for bunnies Vixen and Nina. You already have a picture of Vixen on your website, so I'd like to give you an update on Nina. She's a big beautiful gentle girl with the most soulful eyes you'll ever see. She was adopted in April by one of our active members who fell in love with her at first sight, as did her little boy bunny. She renamed her Luna, and now Luna and Hopscotch are happily bonded and living a wonderful life with their human family. Luna agreed to model for our third annual Rabbit Rescue fundraising calendar, where she will be seen as Miss July. I'll attach the two pictures that will be in the 2007 calendar, feel free to use them on your website. Thanks again for your gift of the grant, it was much appreciated and put to very good use!

The Quad City Animal Welfare Center (QCAWC) is a “no-kill” animal shelter located in Milan. We are a private animal shelter and do not practice euthanasia to control the pet population. We receive no funding and operate solely on donations, our adoption fees, and our services. QCAWC is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. To promote animal welfare our shelter offers separate cat and dog adoption areas, a medical wing with a surgical room, a clinical room, a recovery room and a humane education center. All of our animals have been spay or neutered before they are able to be adopted. Our mission is to operate a shelter for homeless animals, to support a spay and neuter program to help control the pet population, and to educate the public on responsible pet ownership. Through the Ferret/Rabbit Rescue Grant Program we were able to achieve our goal for our current clinic room to become a small animal adoption room called Critter Kingdom. The Ferret/Rabbit Rescue Grant Program gave us the funding to purchase a rabbit home, one animal playpen with floor mat, a ferret cage, a corner ferret/rabbit cage, toys, supplies, and have spay/neuter funding for five (5) rabbits. Critter Kingdom has been a huge success. QCAWC staff and our small animals will be forever grateful.

Dear Ferret Depot,
I am including just a few of the 70+ fuzzy ferrets that the Alberta Ferret Society took under their wing in 2005. As a result of being selected as a Ferret Depot grant receipient we were able to make sure that every ferret received distemper and rabies vaccinations.
With the help of Ferret Depot's grant we were able to direct more of our fundraising dollars towards critical veterinary care and medications such as Lupron or Melatonin for elderly ferrets who were not good candidates for surgery.
In 2005 we also launched our new web site at http://www.albertaferretsociety.com. We are very proud of the new web site and even prouder of the responses we've been getting from it. The AFS also participated in two Pet Expo's in 2005. We also do dozens of information tables every year in pet stores but the Pet Expo's allow us to reach out to thousands of pet owners in just a few days time.
2005 was a busy year for the AFS and so far 2006 has been just as busy. In addition to our usual information tables, fundraising events and taking care of the many surrenders that continue to come in we also became a member of the International Ferret Congress - Canadian Chapter and a sponsor for Ferret-Aid 2006 which was held in Toronto in July 2006. The AFS also hosted Alberta's first ever Ferret Health Veterinary Conference which gave us a change to helped educate veterinary professionals in Alberta. Not only that but we also attended two Spruce Meadows trade fairs. Spruce Meadows is a world class horse jumping facility in Calgary, Alberta. Thousands of people from all over the world come to Spruce Meadows each year and we were very excited to be a part of it.
The Alberta Ferret Society would like to thank you again for helping us to 'make a difference in the lives of Alberta's ferrets in need.
