Please accept this email as our first report on the $200 grant the Humane Society of Boulder Valley received December 28, 2006. The grant funds were designated for enrichment supplies for our ferrets, rabbits and other small mammals that will be a part of our summer camp in 2007. Camp begins June 11 and commences August 3. During this time, we house many of the small mammals in our Education Center where Camp takes place so that the animals receive extra attention, care and exercise as a part of our humane education program with the Camp. We look forward to submitting progress reports on our grant this summer during Camp – when we can include photos of the children in Camp directly utilizing the supplies/toys we received through the grant. As we approach the summer, our Shelter Manager, Bridgette Chesne, will be contacting you to use our grant to purchase the items we need through Ferret Depot and Rabbit Stop.

A change we have made in our summer camp program since submitting our grant is that the camp is no longer affiliated with the YMCA. We decided to run the Camp ourselves this year and are in the process of hiring a Camp Director, Assistant, Interns and student assistants to facilitate the Camp. Our curriculum has already been established and will include hands-on activities that help build a sense of kindness, respect and responsibility for animals. The Camp will include in-depth training in the care and handling of small mammals with specific instruction for ferrets, rabbits and other small mammals. The children will then use the toys and supplies we receive through the grant to benefit our small mammals mentally and physically with playtime and interaction throughout their Camp experience.

In 2006, the Humane Society of Boulder Valley took in 63 ferrets and 121 rabbits. 34 ferrets were adopted and 53 rabbits were adopted in 2006. As of today, in 2007 we have received 9 ferrets and 20 rabbits. 8 ferrets were adopted and 14 rabbits.
